"He hit me with a pretty good kick so I decided to take him down," Ritch said. "I got him with the heel hook and then switched it to a toe-hold to get the tap."
"I thought it was a good fight," the 39 year-old-Pride-veteran added. "I tried standing up to put on a show for the fans, threw some wild kicks; thought it was pretty good. Leg locks are my go to. If I can't knock him out I'll go for a leg lock submission."
The win was Ritch's third in a row, as the fighter and part-time actor hasn't lost since last summer, when he was stopped by fellow veteran Jose "Pele" Landi-Jons at KOTC Canada's "Capital Excalibur" event.
"Both Elmer and Shannon put on an exciting fight," said promoter Ken Kupsch, who believes Ritch could be back for either KOTC Canada's upcoming March 6th event in Penticton, or the March 18th card in Calgary. "There were some great kicks from each but then Elmer landed a solid kick to Shannon's ribs. If he was going to win the fight, he would have to take it to the ground, which he did."
"2010 is going to be a break-out year for "The Cannon," Ritch added. "I'm going to fight a lot for King of the Cage, next is going to be in March probably, and I'm looking forward to fighting."
Some of the other winners from "Nailbiter" included Clay Sheen, Mike Davis, Jordan Murray, Eric Wilson, Chad Williams and Devin Murray.
"We saw an amazing performance from Devin Murray who took on a heavier fighter, Jeff Paulson from Phoenix at 170," said Kupsch, while recalling some of the event's highlights. "I think we will see Devin fighting for a Canadian title belt soon."
"Another thing that stood out was not in a fight but rather after his bout, when Bobby Kalmakoff went all WWE on us," Kupsch added about Kalmakoff, who was submitted by the aforementioned Williams. "He walked around punching all the corner pads, slammed the cage door and then broke a chair outside the cage. I have not been able to talk to him or the commission about it yet, so I don't know the reason or if there is a suspension coming, but it was a sight to see!"
Up next in February, KOTC Canada will return to Edmonton, where fans will have an opportunity to see accomplished grappler and Canadian Heavyweight Champion Adriano Bernardo in action.
"Our next show is Feb 26th in Edmonton at Mirage Banquet where we will see heavyweight champion Adriano Bernardo defend his title against Raphael Bergmann," Kupsch announced.
Bernardo (2-1) tapped out Curtis Suter with a first round rear-naked-choke in November to lay claim to the promotion's Canadian title, while Bergmann is coming off a TKO victory over KOTC vet Jared Kilkenny, to extend his pro record to 3-0.
In addition to the aforementioned upcoming cards in Penticton, Edmonton, and Calgary, KOTC Canada also has plans to hold an event in Nanaimo, BC, March 12th. |

A quick examination of Shannon "The Cannon" Ritch's extensive record reveals that winning by submission is nothing new, and at King of the Cage Canada's "Nailbiter" event in Edmonton Friday night, the jiu-jitsu black belt added another tap-out victory to his 150 fight plus record. Taking on the always tough Elmer Waterhen, Ritch countered a hard kick from Waterhen early on, by taking the bout to the mat and ending it with a first round toe hold.
