For the card's matchmaker, King of the Cage Canadian Light-Heavyweight Champion Bill "The Butcher" Mahood, Saturday's title fight between Chiappe and Volpe will hold special significance, as the veteran promoter is one of Chiappe's instructors and training partners at Team Revolution. The main event bout will mark the second time Chiappe and Volpe have fought; in July, Chiappe was disqualified early into the fight for poking Volpe in the eye.
"I think the referee made a technical error in calling the fight a disqualification," said Mahood. "To be disqualified something has to be intentional and it was not intentional. It was inadvertent due to a tendon condition Ryan has; his finger kind of bobbles around."
Volpe decided not to accept the Canadian middleweight belt, and due to the unfortunate circumstances that surrounded the end of their first bout, both men were willing to battle again.
"This is a sport where you can't evolve over night," Mahood added, while discussing the upcoming rematch. "It takes a while, and for Jason to put into effect a skill package to deal with what Chiappe brings to that particular fight, it ain't going to happen in a couple of months. I think it's going to be a short night for both of them."
Although the vast majority of the card will feature rising local talent and Canadian vets, Catalyst will also feature the aforementioned "Super Fight' between South Korea's Chang Hyun Kim and Brazil's Vinicius Lemos.
"One of Denis Kang's students, Yoon Heo, is now a fighter with Revolution; he's gone over to Korea a few times and cornered Dong Hyun Kim, the UFC fighter" said Mahood, when asked about Kim and how the bout with Lemos came together. "Chang Hyun Kim is one of his main training partners and just happened to be coming over to see Yoon and to do some training."
"At the same time, we had the Killer Bee's Vinicius Lemos, he was over here doing a stint as a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instructor, he's a teammate of Anderson Silva, who's a friend of our teammate Pele (Landi-Jons)," Mahood noted. "He was over at our gym training with some of our lighter guys and he was really hoping for a fight before he went back to Brazil."
"I've seen Vinicius training, and Kim was in the other night, and he was also looking really good. This is a UFC caliber fighter on a King of the Cage card. I'm really excited about this fight."
Mahood was also quick to note that the undercard will likely feature several notable clashes; in particular, the UFC veteran pointed to Clay Davidson vs. Matt Baker, Brian Coldwell vs. Del Melnyk and Graham Spencer vs. Wesley Neil, amongst several others, as bouts that have 'fight of the night' potential.
And in regards to "The Butcher's" own career? After defeating Bill Mesi to win the promotion's Canadian light-heavyweight title in July, Mahood hopes to defend the belt sometime in early 2010.
"My elbow is totally jacked so I'm on a waiting list to get elbow surgery," said Mahood, who revealed that he had an injured elbow heading into his bout with Mesi. "It was looking like I was going to get it last month but something came up on the surgeons schedule. I'm hoping to get it maybe before Christmas. As soon as I get the surgery, six weeks, and then I'm back in there."
