"I'm not a rule maker, judge or a ref, but all I know I was that I was in complete control of the fight," said Chiappe, when asked recently to comment on his first bout with Volpe. "I thought it was close to being finished, but I guess the complaint was that he got poked in the eye. We got stood up and he was given the choice to continue or go on. I think he took the easy way out. That's not really for me to say though. I'm looking to the future now not the past."
Due to the disappointing and anti-climatic result both men agreed to fight again, with the hopes that this time, the middleweight championship can be awarded without any second guessing.
"I think Jason did the right thing by not accepting the belt," Chiappe added. "I think the crowd wasn't happy with the fight, and I believe it was Ken (Kupsch) that said there was going to be a rematch. So I think there's a silver lining in that."
Chiappe was able to take Volpe down in their first encounter and work his top game, a strategy that the Revolution fighter has successfully used before. Heading into his rematch with Volpe, the B.C. fighter continues to be confident, that his game plan will produce positive results once again.
"I'm just going to go in there and do what I do," said Chiappe, while discussing his gameplan for next week's fight. "My game is ever evolving. You'll see a better version of me from what you saw last time. As far as gameplan, it's no secret what I like to do, so he can train all he wants for what he thinks is going to stop me, but it's one thing to train and another thing to actually stop me."
"That being said, my training camp has been great, I'm in shape, and mentally I'm fantastic."
Sometimes when fighters are scheduled to meet for a second time, things have been said or done to bring about animosity between the two athletes, but Chiappe maintains that it's strictly business heading into the rematch.
"No I don't have any animosity towards Jason," Chiappe told KOTC. "He did the right thing by not accepting the belt. I talked to him a bit at the weigh-ins and stuff, he seems like a decent guy, but when we're in the cage, he's the enemy."
As mentioned, Chiappe continues to train out of British Columbia's renowned Revolution camp, and the KOTC vet believes his game has improved immensely, since he made the decision to relocate to the Lower Mainland region to train with the team full time.
"Being with Rev, spending, you know considerable amount of time here, my game keeps evolving," said the 30-year-old-fighter. "Every style that I'll see in MMA we have that style at the gym. It's a pretty tough camp that they run me through but as far as staying here, it's probably the best thing to further my career."
With 2009 coming to a close, Chiappe is the first to concede that a title win would not only be a good way to end the campaign, it would be a fantastic momentum builder heading into 2010.
"I just want to keep it going," said Chiappe. "I just want to keep rolling. I'm not looking past this fight, but I'm hoping to really make a splash in 2010. But I still have to go to work on the 28th." |

It wasn't the kind of result any one was hoping for when Ryan Chiappe and Jason Volpe fought for the Canadian Middleweight Championship at "Capital Excalibur" in July, a title fight that came to an abrupt end, when Chiappe was disqualified for poking Volpe in the eyes. Now, on November 28th, Chiappe and Volpe will have an opportunity to put all the controversy to rest, as the two middleweights will meet again for the belt at KOTC Canada's "Catalyst" event in Vernon, B.C.
